Beane presents Days Gone By Volume One
November 03, 2009 02:07 AM PST
So beside my weekly radioshow I do each week, I sometimes like to dip my toes into the beatcave with a themed mix. At present I've a got few different series on the go: jazz and latin (Martians Don't Do Digital), outer space electronica and techno (Journey to the Planet Blob), chill out downtempo gear (W&B Roadtrip) and deep house (House up my Strada). One mix series I've always wanted to get off the ground is one that would focus on my drum and bass roots. Unlike many on here I wasn't brought up listening to so-called 'cool' stuff from my parents like John Coltrane, Miles Davis or Stevie Wonder but quite the opposite. At 16 the last thing I wanted was that weird stuff. So I was left to my own devices to annoy the staff in shops like Andy's Records and Our Price in Peterborough naively asking for various dubplates I'd heard on my latest rave 8 tape pack. Mental. I was too young to experience a lot of the raves that were slowly coming to an end in the early nineties but before I got the chance to go down roads such as house, hip hop, jazz or techno I was most interested in drum and bass and bought everything I could get my grubby hands on. Over the years, as I started discovering many other styles of music, I eventually left behind my drum and bass days for various reasons (although certainly not the ethos) but I still have a hefty old collection of stuff that I simply would never sell. So here we are then. 2009. I've knocked up what I hope will be a yearly mix of some of the tracks from labels and producers that I used to go crazy for between 1993-1999 - a nostalgic tip of the hat I suppose to my youth. It's a bit ruff around the edges and all done in one take with no editing but that's how we used to roll back then (shout to the direct drive massive!). Oh and of course it goes without saying, there ain't an mp3 in sight - we were years away from that back then... Tracklisting 01. Peshay - Psychosis | Metalheadz 12" [1994]

Podcast SummaryMixing up all manner of funkiness - from broken beat to jazz to latin to funk to disco to hip hop to latin to downtempo flavours - if it's funky it goes in! About BeaneI’ve been collecting records for a good 16 or so years now, and DJing for around 13 years. It all kicked off by finding this thing called music in the form of Hardcore as it came out of the smoky acid house/warehouse rave phase back in the early nineties. From there my music tastes evolved as I discovered lots of new and exciting music over the years, as the dance scene exploded across the country creating dozens of genres and styles. Never being one for putting things in boxes, I soon began mixing up various styles of music regardless of tempo or genre in marathon 12 hour sets at the infamous NOODLES BBQ's held in the summers of 98/99/2000. After much encouragement from friends, I put on a series of one-off parties called Noodles, which took place in various venues around Nottingham where I could play the sort of records I felt were being ignored. This opened me up to a whole network of local and national DJ's and music lovers which have become good friends, from not only my home city but from around the country. As for playing out, I'm one of the Basmement Boogaloo residents and often play at their allday events and overseas boat parties in Croatia. I'm also a member of the Soulbuggin' collective and I DJ regularly at our monthly residency at the Moog bar (every 4th Friday of the month). I can also be found making guest appearances at various nights across Nottingham, such as Spectrum, Audiophile, Percussion, the myhouse-yourhouse alldayers and the Smugglers Inn events. I've been very fortunate to play alongside great DJs such as Gilles Peterson, Greg Wilson, Norman Jay, Benji B, Quantic, Bugz in the Attic, Red Rack Em, Yam Who, Stuart Patterson, Dave Jarvis and many many more. I've also have my own online radio show which goes out every Sunday 2pm - 4pm on myhouse-yourhouse.net LIVE or you can listen on demand at http://www.beane.podomatic.com
